Race Recap: B'More SUP Cup Race Series #1

Race Recap: B'More SUP Cup Race Series #1

Last weekend, B’More SUP kicked off the first race of its 2021 series. The B’More SUP Cup is traditionally one of the last races of the summer season, but this year, they switched things up by stretching the event into a series of three races, making up for all of those cancelled races and events in 2020. We’re here for it!

Here’s a quick recap!

Scott’s Race

As always, B’More SUP delivered a well organized race full of good vibes. The courses were interesting and fun, with multiple turns throughout. The layout also allowed spectators to see more of both the 2 and 5 mile races. Honestly, it was one of the best venues I’ve raced at in a long time, and it was a treat to have little-to-no boat traffic. I raced the short course again while I get myself back into racing shape. But, since it was only 2 miles, I challenged myself to sprint the full distance and maintain that pace, which I was really pleased I was able to do. Slowly and steadily, I’m working my way back up to the longer courses!

Meredith’s Race

Surprise! I didn’t race on Saturday! I agonized over this decision all last week while I was fighting my first head cold since February 2020. By Saturday I was feeling a lot better, but I was drained and not feeling race ready. Instead of pushing myself, which I usually try to do, I decided to listen to my body and just rest. I definitely felt some race FOMO, and the glassy conditions really made me wonder how I would’ve performed, but I’m overall happy with my decision. Plus, it allowed me to cheer alongside Fin, who really enjoyed seeing all of his out-of-town SUP friends!

And, introducing for the first time ever: Fin’s race perspective!

  • Angry with Mom and Dad for not letting me swim (they said something about too much rain the day before and run-off, whatever that is).

  • Super interested in the ruckus at the race start.

  • Successfully scammed my way onto Dad’s race board after he finished and felt right at home on the water.

  • So many hugs from friends and lots of goose poop for snacking.

  • I still don’t know what’s in the coconut cup.

  • 11/10 event.

The next race we’re able to make is on July 11, but here’s what’s coming up on the race calendar:

We hope to see you at an upcoming event, and don’t forget to reach out if you want to work on race skills, strategy or technique!
