Scott and Meredith Jorss are DC SUP Couple.jpg

Aloha.

We’re Meredith & Scott — that SUP couple. We love spreading the SUP stoke and inspiring outdoor adventure. We’re so glad you’re here!

Allow Us to Reintroduce Ourselves

Allow Us to Reintroduce Ourselves

Hiking with Fin

It’s been a minute, right? Our last blog post was in June. June?!

When we opened our laptop to start writing this, we discovered an unfinished post we started in August. August?!

We’ve been unmotivated. We’ve been reclusive. We’ve been surviving, not thriving.

That’s okay. We’re healthy. Our family is safe. Our friends are understanding + dealing with the same realities. We’re lucky.

It’s not that we don’t want to share. It’s just that we don’t think we’re doing anything worthy of sharing. We know we’re much more than just SUP - it’s something we’ve been trying to show for a while now. But we’re not traveling, or snowboarding, or up hilling, or going on picturesque hikes.

We’re existing within a three mile radius of our home. We want to share, but we’re worried you won’t care.

We’re getting in our own way.

So today we’re ripping off the band aid. Here’s what we’ve been up to.

We’ve been grieving. Let’s get this one out of the way first. Scott’s mom passed away over the summer and truthfully, we’re still grieving. The process has been tough and we’ve been feeling our feelings while isolated from our usual support systems.

We’re still exploring, but mostly just our neighborhood. On weekends, we hike the trails behind our house in Glover Park. Sometimes it feels monotonous, but we’ve embraced discovering new spots to explore with Fin. The fresh air also does us good.

Scott’s patrolling. Ski Patrol duties haven’t stopped with the pandemic. We’re considering a behind-the-scenes post on what it’s been like this year. Stay tuned.

We’re Peloton-ing. Yep, we bought a Peloton! We’ve embraced spinning - something we never thought we could or would do. In fact, tonight is Meredith’s century ride!

We’re optimistic about the SUP season ahead. Things will likely still look different, with races postponed and class sizes limited, but here’s what we’re looking forward to (and if you’re new here, welcome - here’s what you have to look forward to).

SUP Social Hour! Last year we introduced a weeknight SUP Social Hour and it quickly became a fan favorite. It was two hours of exploring the Potomac and connecting paddlers, new and seasoned alike, while working on some skills and technique. We can’t wait to keep this up and welcome more people!

Private lessons and group clinics. We can’t wait to welcome people back to the water and hope to connect with our friends from paddling outfitters around the region, introducing them to SUP in DC and unique whitewater adventures.

Revamping race training. We love SUP racing and introducing others to the sport, but we’re putting our heads together on how we can refresh this weekly class. If you have ideas, we’d love to hear them!

Making the outdoors more inclusive. We want to turn our backs on any performative allyship and participate in meaningful ways to foster inclusivity in not just paddle sports but the outdoor industry at large. We don’t know what part we can play yet, but we hope to figure it out soon.

We’re going to try not to be strangers. Thanks for sticking with us.
